On December 13 Autodesk filed a motion [30] opposing the ODA's December 7 request [28] for a 30 day extension. Autodesk does not oppose an extension of up to 10 days, but argues that since the TRO does not adequately address all of their immediate concerns and that ODA has not responded to all of Autodesk's additional demands, further delay could cause further irreparable harm.

The primary Autodesk concern appears to be that ODA members and their customers may continue to create "infringing" DWG files even while the ODA is making updated libraries available.

Re: Autodesk opposes 30 day extension

From ralphg via email:

Autodesk could unwittingly fall into the trap Microsoft fell into. It's nice to aspire to become a monopoly, but then a different set of rules apply.

Autodesk is the largest company in its niche, nearly twice the size of the nearest competitor. It could be considered a near-monopoly, especially in the case of the DWG file.

(Last decade, Autodesk was investigated for being a monopoly, because it claimed to have 70% of the market. When the FTC investigation began, suddenly its market share fell to 10%. A similar bashfullness has come over Autodesk this year; its press releases claim it is the leading company, but in the legal filings it reduces itself to "one of the leading" companies.)

Anyhow, just as the EU is now forcing Microsoft to open its software to competitors with full documentation Autodesk may end up being forced to open up DWG, and not on its terms.

It would be a good thing if Autodesk opens the DWG file format. Then other companies can make software that are fully compatible with AutoCAD DWG drawings.
