Nancy Gohring of IDG News Service reports in PC World about Monday's hearing in the Vernor case. From the article: "The two-hour hearing, in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington in Seattle, was in response to motions for summary judgment filed by both sides. The judge can now rule for Vernor or for Autodesk or send the case to trial."

As I expected, the Vernor ruling is getting a lot of airplay, and a Google search will turn up myriad discussions on the subject (most, unfortunately, devoid of real value). Here are two links to useful expert commentary:

For those of you following the Vernor case, today's order elicited a blog post from Public Citizen, the group representing Vernor in the case. This represents a biased viewpoint from one of the parties in the suit. I will post links to independent legal analysis as I find it.

Evan Yares has written an excellent analysis of the Vernor lawsuit. It looks like this lawsuit is gaining traction in the blogosphere, so I expect much more commentary over the next few weeks.

Deelip Menezes has an ongoing discussion on his blog about ownership and control of data files generally, and AutoCAD DWG files in particular. If you're interested in a small sample of opinions on the subject, I highly recommend Deelip's cogent commentary. I've added to the grapevine two recent posts from the discussion that are fairly directly related to the lawsuit, but the entire discussion is at least tangentially relevant.
